
Mangaluru, July 5, 2026: A 21-year-old student from Mangaluru, pursuing higher studies in Germany, died in a suspected drowning incident during an outing with friends near Leipzig on Thursday (July 2).
The deceased, Mohammed Aniz Abubakar, a resident of Marakada-Kunjathbail in Mangaluru, was studying in the third semester of the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) programme at the Rahn Education Institution in Halle, Germany.

According to reports, Aniz and his friends had gone trekking before visiting a waterside recreational area near the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig. He reportedly went missing shortly afterwards. Emergency services were alerted, and rescue teams recovered his body from the water following a search operation.
German police have taken four students, including two Indian nationals who were with Aniz, in for questioning as part of the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the suspected drowning. Authorities have not disclosed further details about the probe.
Aniz’s father, Abubakar Siddique, is employed in Saudi Arabia. The family’s legal representative, P.A. Hameed Padubidri, said efforts are being made in coordination with the Indian Embassy in Berlin to complete the formalities for repatriating Aniz’s mortal remains to Mangaluru for the last rites.
