Mangaluru, October 9, 2026: Police have initiated the exhumation of a man’s body in Mangaluru for forensic examination, nearly two months after his death under suspicious circumstances. The move follows a complaint alleging that his daughter and others were involved in his death over property-related disputes.
Albert Rego, a resident of First Cross, Kottara, reportedly died on July 19. According to the complaint, his daughter, Maya Rego, who lived with him, allegedly performed his last rites with the assistance of close associates without a post-mortem examination. The complaint also alleges that other family members and local residents were not adequately informed about the circumstances of his death.
Suspecting foul play, Albert Rego’s friend, Harold Pereira, lodged a complaint at Urwa police station. A case has been registered against Maya Rego and others.
The complaint alleges that Albert was pressured to transfer his property to his daughter’s name and was subjected to harassment over property-related matters. It further alleges that he was murdered over financial disputes with the assistance of others. The complaint also raises allegations concerning the possible involvement of a doctor and a police personnel.
Albert had reportedly worked abroad and accumulated property. Two of his children live elsewhere, while Maya lived with him. According to the complainant, Albert had confided in friends about the alleged harassment and difficulties he faced over property-related issues.
Following the complaint, Urwa police began investigating the circumstances surrounding his death. As part of the investigation, steps have now been taken to exhume his body from the burial ground on the premises of Derebail Church near Kuntikana for forensic science laboratory (FSL) examination.
FSL experts and police personnel arrived at the burial site to oversee the process. The exhumation is reportedly being carried out in the presence of Maya Rego and the complainant.
The exact cause of Albert Rego’s death and the veracity of the allegations are expected to be established through the forensic examination and further police investigation.
