Mangaluru, Nov 7, 2026: A 45-year-old man has allegedly lost Rs 1.96 lakh in a cyber fraud after downloading a mobile application advertised on Facebook as offering free access to all television channels.

According to a complaint filed at the CEN Crime police station, the victim came across an advertisement for an application named ’Free TV App (LWTV)’ while browsing Facebook at his residence on October 31. However, an APK file was allegedly installed on his mobile phone without his knowledge. Subsequently, two unauthorised UPI transactions were carried out from his bank account. On November 3, Rs 98,000 was transferred to an unknown bank account, followed by another transaction of Rs 98,000 on November 4.

The victim reportedly did not receive any bank alerts or SMS notifications about the transactions. He discovered the fraud on November 4 while checking his account balance after making a UPI payment during a shopping visit.

On checking his mobile phone, he noticed that an APK file had been downloaded. He later lodged a complaint alleging that unidentified cyber fraudsters had siphoned off a total of Rs 1.96 lakh from his bank account through two unauthorised transactions.
