Mangaluru: Man arrested for smuggling ganja into district jail

Mangaluru, July 3, 2026: A man has been arrested for allegedly throwing a packet of ganja into the premises of the District Jail in Mangaluru. The accused was chased down and caught by KSISF personnel in a dramatic pursuit.

The arrested accused has been identified as Tilak Raj, a native of Kolathamajalu Kolakere in Bantwal taluk, who is currently residing in Urwa.


Ganja smuggling

According to police, at around 4:20 am on July 2, Tilak Raj allegedly threw a suspicious parcel containing ganja towards the prison’s kitchen area. The act was noticed by KSISF RPC Kiran, who immediately alerted ASI Kiran Ambig. Acting swiftly, the security personnel chased the accused for nearly 500 metres before apprehending him.

The accused was later produced before the jail’s supervising officer, Police Inspector Subhash, in whose presence he reportedly confessed to the offence.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a man identified as Kiran, a resident of Moodushedde, had allegedly handed over the ganja, a lighter, and rolling papers to the accused, instructing him to throw them inside the prison. The accused was allegedly paid Rs 2,000 for the task.

Police further said the accused was given the mobile number of an inmate identified as Loy Vegas, who allegedly directed him to throw the narcotics at a specific location inside the jail.

A case has been registered at Barke Police Station, and further investigation is underway to uncover the network behind the smuggling attempt.
