Mangaluru: MCC bans PoP Ganesha idols, urges eco-friendly Gowri-Ganesha celebrations

Mangaluru, September 10, 2026: The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has directed the public, traders, idol makers and Ganeshotsava committees to celebrate the Gowri-Ganesha festival in an environmentally friendly manner.

The production, storage and immersion of Gowri-Ganesha idols made using Plaster of Paris (PoP), heavy metals or other toxic chemical substances have been completely prohibited across the state. The immersion of such idols in any water source is also banned.

The MCC has prohibited the manufacture of Ganesha idols using Plaster of Paris or other chemical materials. The storage, sale, distribution and public display of PoP idols will not be permitted. The production and sale of idols painted with chemical colours containing toxic substances or heavy metals are also prohibited.

The public and Ganeshotsava committees have been advised to use idols made only from natural clay and other eco-friendly materials, with preference given to idols decorated using natural and non-toxic colours.

The MCC has also instructed that Ganesha idols must not be immersed in lakes, rivers, canals, reservoirs or any other water bodies.

Idol makers and sellers have been directed not to use toxic chemicals, chemical-based colours or Plaster of Paris in the manufacture of Gowri and Ganesha idols.

If idols violating these guidelines are found being manufactured, sold or used, the MCC will seize them and initiate action against those responsible under the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974, Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981, and Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.

The MCC warned that traders, manufacturers and Ganeshotsava committees failing to comply with the guidelines will face legal action and penalties under applicable laws, including the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026.

The MCC Commissioner has urged citizens to give priority to cleanliness and public health while celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi in an eco-friendly manner.
