Mangaluru, Sept. 17, 2026: An undertrial prisoner at the Mangaluru District Prison allegedly created a ruckus over a demand for beedis and threatened prison officials, including the superintendent, on September 14.

The accused has been identified as Mohammed Faizal. According to the complaint, Faizal entered the prison kitchen in the morning and allegedly obstructed the preparation of meals. He reportedly threatened the inmates working there and demanded that cooking be stopped until he was provided with beedis.

He later allegedly gathered other inmates and confronted the prison superintendent, insisting that no food be prepared until his demand was met. He also allegedly threatened to contaminate the food with a lizard or cockroach, create controversy and get the official transferred.

When prison officials locked the kitchen gate, Faizal allegedly picked up a nearby gas cylinder and repeatedly banged it against the gate and lock. He reportedly shouted at the officials to open the gate and threatened to blow up the cylinder.

The Barke police have registered a case against Faizal for allegedly provoking fellow inmates, gathering them and urging them not to return to their cells until they were given beedis. The complaint also alleges that his actions caused a disturbance and obstructed prison officials from carrying out their duties.
