Mangaluru: Instagram page with 1650 followers deactivated for posting provocative content

Mangaluru, May 13, 2025: An Instagram page with around 1,650 followers, known for posting provocative content on social media, has been deactivated.

Following the murder of Suhas Shetty under the jurisdiction of Bajpe Police Station in Mangaluru, posts were being shared on the Instagram page named team_karna_surathkal that incited hatred among people of different religions and communities.

The posts were intended to provoke people into unlawful acts and foster animosity between communities. The page had approximately 1,650 followers, said Commissioner of Police Anupam Agrawal.

A case was registered against the Instagram page at the Surathkal Police Station, and the investigation was transferred to the CEN Crime Police Station in Mangaluru City. Later, communication was initiated with the relevant law enforcement agency to take action against the page. Based on this, the concerned agency has deactivated the Instagram page team_karna_surathkal and ensured it is no longer operational in India.

The investigation was carried out under the guidance of Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal , Deputy Commissioners of Police Siddharth Goyal, Ravishankar. The CEN police are continuing the further investigation.

Plaint against former corporator

A complaint has been filed at the Surathkal police station regarding a Facebook account under the name of former corporator Shwetha Poojary, alleging that posts inciting hate were shared from it.

One of the posts reportedly contained statements like, “Locals in Bajpe are circulating photos on social media asking who these burqa-clad women are; we will teach them a lesson.” Another post allegedly used derogatory language against District in-charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao.

Vice-president of the Congress Mangaluru North Assembly constituency women’s wing in her complaint stated that false information was posted on social media with the intent to create unrest in society.
