Mangaluru: Four convicted in 2018 gang rape case sentenced to 20 years rigorous imprisonment

Mangaluru, July 31, 2026: A special court in Mangaluru has sentenced four men to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment each in connection with the 2018 gang rape of a young woman. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 74,000 on each of the convicts.

The judgment was delivered by the II Additional District and Sessions (Special) Court in Mangaluru.

The convicted persons have been identified as Prajwal (33), Arun Amin (34), Aditya Salian (28), and Abdul Riyaz (40).

According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on November 18, 2018, when the survivor had gone to a beach with her friend. A group of seven persons, including three juveniles, allegedly sexually assaulted her. Following the incident, a case was registered at the Mangaluru Women’s Police Station.

The investigation was initially conducted by then Women’s Police Station Inspector Kalavathi K. and then Assistant Commissioner of Police Manjunath Shetty. Subsequently, then ACP R. Srinivasa Gowda filed the charge sheet before the court.

After examining the evidence, Judge Jagadish V.N. held that the prosecution had proved the charges against the accused and sentenced the four adult convicts to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment each along with the fine.

The prosecution was represented by Special Public Prosecutor Jyothi Pramod Nayak, who examined the witnesses and argued the case before the court.

Meanwhile, proceedings against the three juvenile accused are continuing before the Juvenile Justice Board.
