Mangaluru, June 18, 2023: The City Commissioner of Police, Kuldeep Kumar R Jain, has called upon the public to collaborate with the police as volunteers and work as traffic wardens to effectively handle the unprecedented surge in vehicles during peak hours.
Addressing the public during the ’Sanchara Samparka Diwas’ event, organized by the Traffic East Police Station in Kadri to discuss traffic concerns, Jain emphasized that once selected, volunteers would receive training and assist the traffic police at crucial intersections, particularly during peak hours. He stated that traffic wardens would need to dedicate a minimum of four hours per week to manage and regulate traffic. Jain urged people to enroll as volunteers, highlighting that participating in traffic management was a social responsibility.
Jain stated, "In order to instill road discipline, we need to establish our presence on the roads. By having an ample number of traffic wardens near schools, we can serve the community more effectively."
He further mentioned, "The city police have identified security guards from schools and colleges and have sought their assistance in facilitating safe road crossings for children and ensuring that parents park their vehicles appropriately without disrupting traffic flow."
The Traffic Warden Squad was established in the city in 2015, led by the late nonagenarian Joe Gonsalves, who passed away in 2021 at the age of 99. Currently, Sureshnath M L, a retired professor from St. Aloysius College, heads the Traffic Warden Organisation in the city. The city police are considering a uniform consisting of white shirts and blue pants for the traffic wardens, according to Deputy Commissioner of Police B P Dinesh Kumar.
