Mangaluru, May 16, 2025: A cargo vessel named MSV Salamat, which had set sail from Mangaluru Port to Lakshadweep, sank about 60 nautical miles southwest of the Karnataka coast near Mangaluru in the early hours of Wednesday. The Indian Coast Guard rescued all six crew members on board.
The vessel had departed from Mangaluru Port on May 12, carrying cement and other construction materials to Lakshadweep, and was expected to reach Kadmat Island on May 18. However, around 5:30 AM IST on May 14, the vessel was caught in a massive wave and sank. The exact cause of the sinking is still under investigation.
The crew members escaped the sinking vessel using a small lifeboat. A nearby ship spotted them and alerted the Indian Coast Guard in Mangaluru. The Coast Guard patrol vessel ICG Vikram responded promptly, rescued the crew, provided them with first aid, and brought them safely to the New Mangaluru Port on Thursday, according to Coast Guard officials.
