Mangaluru: BJP protests over ‘lavish announcements’ at Cabinet meeting despite fiscal deficit

Mangaluru, Sep 25, 2026: The Dakshina Kannada district unit of the BJP staged a protest near the Mini Vidhana Soudha in Mangaluru on Friday, accusing the state government of making a series of announcements during the Cabinet meeting held in the district despite the state’s financial constraints.

BJP MLAs Vedavyas Kamath and Bharat Shetty participated in the protest, during which party workers held empty vessels and raised slogans against the Congress government.

Protesters also displayed a photograph of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah with a flower behind his ear and a vessel in his hand, as a symbolic protest. BJP leaders alleged that the Congress government had “given a vessel” not just to Dakshina Kannada but to the entire state.

Addressing the protesters, MLA Vedavyas Kamath criticised the outcome of the Cabinet meeting held in Dakshina Kannada, alleging that the meeting amounted to “eating and leaving without giving anything substantial to the district.”

MLA Bharat Shetty also launched a sharp attack on the Congress government, calling it a “real estate government.” He alleged that people close to the government were involved in land purchases.

Shetty also criticised the government over its reported expenditure on food and arrangements, sarcastically asking whether ₹15 crore had to be spent for eating anjal (seer fish). “If you want anjal fish, tell us. We will send it to you,” he said.

The BJP leaders accused the state government of failing to address the concerns of Dakshina Kannada despite holding the Cabinet meeting in Mangaluru.
