Mangaluru: Accused absconding for 12 years arrested

Mangaluru, Oct 8, 2025: The Mangaluru North Police have arrested an accused who had been absconding for nearly 12 years without appearing before the court for trial.

The arrested person has been identified as Althaf (47), a resident of Kasaba Bengre. Several cases, including rioting, use of weapons, causing damage, and issuing threats, had been registered against him at the Mangaluru North Police Station under the jurisdiction of the Mangaluru City Police Commissioner.

A charge sheet had been filed in the Mangaluru 2nd CJM Court, and trial proceedings were underway. However, the accused failed to appear in court and went into hiding for about 12 years, leading the court to treat the matter as a long-pending case.

Based on reliable information, a police team led by ASI Babu, Gururaj B.T., and Sunil Kumar N. from the North Police Station conducted an operation in the Mangaluru Port area on October 5 and arrested the accused.

He was produced before the Mangaluru court, which has remanded him to judicial custody, police said.
