Mangaluru: Absconding accused in 2017 attempt-to-murder case held in Bengaluru

Mangaluru, Sep 12, 2025: The Urwa police have arrested a man who had been absconding for eight years in connection with an attempt-to-murder case involving an assault on a police officer in 2017.

The accused, identified as Niyaz Shiyas Nia, was taken into custody in Hulimavu, Arakere, Bengaluru, and produced before the court. He had failed to appear in court since the case was registered and had been in hiding.


Absconding accused held after 12 years on the run


According to police, Nia faces 13 criminal cases in Mangaluru and Udupi districts, and multiple courts had issued warrants against him.

Meanwhile, police under the Mangaluru City Commissionerate have intensified operations in recent months to track down long-absconding offenders. In the last three months alone, 52 accused involved in various old cases—some pending for over two years—have been arrested and produced before the courts, where they were remanded to judicial custody.

Among those arrested are accused in communal violence cases such as Chandrahass Keshav Shettigar, Leeladhar, Khader Kulai, Shakeeb, Mohammed Hussain, and Rameez, as well as rowdy-sheeters like Aditya Kumar, Bharat Balu, Mohammed Suhaib, Mohammed Mustafa, Mohammed Nazeem, Umar Nawaf, Umar Farooq, Faraz, and Mohammed Niyaz.

In NDPS-related cases, accused including Pumpa Kashi, Deepa Narayan, Mohammed Nihaal, Mohammed Shafiq, Babar Pasha, Mohammed Itbal, and Abubakar were arrested.

In addition, those accused in murder and attempt-to-murder cases—such as Shanawaz alias Shan, Ganesh Lakshman Saket, Aditya Kumar, Abdul Naseer, Imran alias Imbu, Rameez, and Mohammed Nazeem—were also produced before the court.

Police further booked 12 more long-absconding accused, including Vishal Kumar, Mohammed Nihaal, Irshad, and Hanif Kokkada, under Sections 208, 209, and 269 of the BNS for failing to appear before court despite warrants being issued.
