No incidents of violence have been reported. In a bid to maintain peace and law and order on Thursday, the police had arrested 65 persons notorious for creating problems in such situations.

As soon as the Allahabad High Court gave its verdict at 4:30 p.m., a crowd gathered near Bhavanthi Street and started bursting firecrackers; but the police rushed to the spot and dispersed the crowd. Most of the shops in the city remained closed; and even office employees decided to stay at home in the afternoons.

The busiest streets of the city looked deserted as the evening drew near; and the number of buses plying along local routes reduced. Buses travelling long distances were cancelled in the evening.

The latest report is that the police have ordered shop owners to close their shops to prevent untoward incidents.
