Mangalore in Monsoon mayhem. City roads are proving to be death-trap

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, June 6, 2011: The roads of Mangalore have proved to be unfit for use by pedestrians as well as motorists within a day of raining.

Although the district administration and the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) assure that they have taken all the required precautions against monsoon dangers, the roads are in a state of half repair. Motorists have to use all their skills to dodge the square pits dug by the MCC to provide underground connection on concrete roads at Kankanady, Colaco Hospital, SP Road, and various other places. The pits are yet to be covered up.

The MCC has already spent Rs. 100 crore on concretizing main roads, but in many places the roads are still incomplete. There are no footpaths, no storm water drains, and parking facilities. For instance, the KS Rao Road comes right up to the shops and people who step out of the shops find themselves in the middle of traffic. Owing to the absence of storm water drains, the rain water flows along the road, forcing pedestrians to wade through the water and get dirty water splashed all over them whenever a vehicle passes through.

The connecting road between MG Road and Mannagudda road also has no storm water drains, owing to which the water gushes into shops and houses on either side of the road.

MG Road has good storm water drains, still the water floods onto the roads because the underground drainage channels are blocked. The manholes carrying the sewage are also flooded and dirty water floods the road, making life unbearable for citizens.

In Pumpwell, residents as well as shop owners have to battle with rain water and dirty sewage water flooding into their property.
