Mangalore getting ready to receive Queens’ baton

DC PonnurajMangalore, September 3: Mangalore made elaborate arrangements to receive the Queen’s Baton Relay, which is touring all over India to promote the forthcoming Commonwealth Games. The Baton, which has already entered Karnataka, will arrive in Mangalore on September 5, Sunday, said, DC V Ponnuraj.


Speaking at the press meet held at his chamber, DC said that the relay will be welcomed with a “purnakumba” as soon as it arrives at Nellyadi, Puttur at 12:30 p.m. on September 5 from Hassan. District-in-charge Minister Krishna J. Palemar, Zilla Panchayat President K. Santhosh Kumar Bhandary; and ex international sportsmen Pushparaj Hegde and Sanjeeva Puttur will receive the relay, which will then be treated to a cultural programme followed by lunch.


The relay will leave Nellyady at 1:30 p.m. and reach Kadri Park at 5 p.m. Mayor Rajani Dugganna will welcome the relay at Kadri Park on behalf of the people of Mangalore. Vandana Rao, Shobha Narayan, and Vandana Shanbhag will receive the relay and then start a 6-km lap across the city. The relay will then proceed to Town Hall through Bejai Church Road, Lalbhag, PVS Circle, Ambedkar Circle, and Hampankatta.


Queens Baton

 

The district administration will organize cultural programmes and host a dinner for the team at Town Hall, said DC V. Ponnuraj and urged people to participate in large numbers and welcome the relay in Kadri since it is Sunday. Mangalore Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh said that the police will cordon off the road through which the relay will pass.
