Mangaluru, Oct 5, 2025: C.K. Kishore Kumar, Director of Physical Education at Mangalore University, passed away in the city on Sunday at the age of 60.
Mr. Kumar had been hospitalised for the past 10 days following a health complication and breathed his last around 2 a.m. He is survived by his wife, Aruna, an advocate, and two sons. Friends and well-wishers paid their respects at his residence in Kadri Shivabagh between 11 a.m. and 12.30 p.m.
Beginning his career as a physical and cultural instructor at MGM College, Udupi, in 1990, Mr. Kumar later worked as a guest faculty at the University College of Physical Education, Bengaluru. He joined Mangalore University in July 1996 as Assistant Director of Physical Education and went on to serve in several key roles, including Deputy Director, Chairman and Coordinator of the Department of PG Studies and Research in Physical Education and Sports, and Director of the department. He also briefly served as In-charge Vice-Chancellor and Registrar.
Mr. Kumar is remembered for framing the University’s sports policy, which was first implemented during the South Zone Inter-University Kho-Kho Championship in 2016-17. Under his leadership, the University’s men’s and women’s athletics teams won the overall championship at the inter-university competitions in 2015-16.
He was instrumental in setting up modern gym facilities for sportspersons at the university hostel and recreation facilities for university staff at the Administrative Block and Indoor Sports Complex.
