Mangalore : Forest Minister Ramanatha Rai launches Laksha Vriksha Abhiyan

Mangalore, Aug 3, 2013 : Laksha Vriksha Abhiyan, a state level campaign of planting one lakh saplings, was launched  in Mangalore on August 3, Saturday by  State Minister for Forest and DK District in-charge Minister Ramanatha Rai at a function held at Town Hall.

Speaking on the occasion, Rai said  there was an urgent need to create awareness in the society on the need to protect nature and environment. Man’s greed   has led to widespread destruction of nature, he said. Continuing Rai said the Laksha Vriksha Abhiyan will not be restricted merely to plant saplings but will be a  mass campaign that will be taken up by all departments. He said the two month long campaign will be held in all the districts.


DV Sadananda Gowda,  BJP National Vice President and former chief minister, who was the chief guest, said any government programme can be successful when there is active public participation. Referring to the wild elephant menace in Madikeri, Sakleshpur, Sullia and other places, he urged the government to take up suitable remedial measures.


He also declared that he was ready to fight against the proposed Niddodi ultra mega thermal power project, setting aside party lines. He said he has also written to the Centre on the hazards posed by the project. At the same time DVS said the proposed Ettinahole project would do no harm to the district.

JR Lobo, MLA of Mangalore South, presided over the function. Deputy Commissioner N Prakash, MLC Monappa Bhandari, Chief Forest Conservator B Shivana Gowda and others were present.

A Jatha was taken out from Jyothi Circle to Town Hall prior to the formal function.
