Mangalore Dasara to commence on Oct 8

Mangalore, September 21, 2010: Harikrishna Bantwal, the trustee of the committee, said in a press conference that the Navarathri Utsav, also known as the Mangalore Dasara, will commence at Kudroli Gokarnanatha Kshetra on Oct 8 – 18, 2010.  He added that this is the only temple in the world where the idols of Sharada and the Navadurgas are installed in one place.

DC V. Ponnural will inaugurate the festival. The consecration of the Navadurgas will mark the beginning of the Mangalore Dasara celebration on Oct 8, Friday at 12:15 p.m. The nine-day festival will comprise a number of cultural and religious programme.  

Every day, special poojas will be offered to the newly installed idols of Mahagowri, Kathyayini, Mahakali, Brahmacharini, Shailaputhri, Kushmandini, Siddhidhatri, and Skandmatha—all different avatars of Goddess Durga.  

On the last day, a grand procession will start at 4 p.m. from Kudroli Temple and will pass through Mannagudda, M. G. Road, Alake, and Ram Bhavan Circle, before heading back to Kudroli, where all the idols will be immersed.  

Troupes of artistes will arrive from all over the state and also from the neighboring states. The procession will comprise dollu kunita, somana kunitha, hulivesha, karaga kunitha, yakshagana, veeragase, gombe mela, Trishur color umbrella dancers, chende and panchavadya from Kerala, kolata from Andhra Pradesh, a troupe of 100 drummers from Pune and Maharashtra, and several local teams.  

President and Administrator Officer H. S. Sairam, Shri Gokarnatha Kshethra, Vice President Raghavendra Kulur, Padmaraj R., Devdas, Devendra Poojary, and others were present for the press conference.
