Mangalore: Cops raid shops in vicinity of colleges; seize ghutka, cigarettes

Mangalore, Feb12, 2013 : In yet another raid with an objective of countering the drug menace, MCC officials and the police launched a joint operation on February 11, Monday and raided as many as 15 shops near various educational institutions. Nearly 300 packets of cigarettes and a sack of ghutka and tobacco products were seized.
Shops close by Canara College, Besant College, Sharada Vidyalaya, Gandhinagar School and Women’s Polytechnic were raided.
Selling cigarettes and tobacco products to persons below 18 years of age, and within 100 yards of educational institutions is prohibited as per the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act 2003,
During the raid, officials found that some of the shops had no license and were asked to secure license.

The raids were carried out by an MCC team led by Health Inspector Bharath Kumar, Kadri SI Madan and others.
