Mangalore, Sep 26, 2013 : An unauthorized cement godown at Hoigebazar in the city was raided and sealed by a team of MCC officials on September 26, Thursday. The godown belonging to the Madras Cements Ltd was sealed for also causing pollution.

The raid followed complaints by several residents of the locality. Environmental engineer Madhu Manohar who was part of the raiding team said the raid was conducted after local MLA JR Lobo brought the matter to the notice of the authorities and ordered a raid. He also said residents have been complaining about the pollution caused during loading and unloading cement bags.
He also informed that the godown was functioning since three years sans any licence and added the firm had applied for licence when people started complaining.
It is learnt, the two earlier notices served by the MCC to the godown authorities had gone unresponded. Even the directive to shift the godown to an industrial area went unheeded, the officer said.
The MCC team which sealed the godown has asked the godown authorities to seek a fresh licence. However, the godown manager Arun argued that only one apartment nearby faced problem.
The raiding team included MCC officials Basavaraj, Yeshwant, Bharat Kumar and Karunaker.
