Malaria, Dengue fear grips DK

Mangalore, June 13, 2013: Every monsoons, it is the Malaria and Dengue fear that grips the coastal district. This year too it is no different. Already several cases of Dengue fever have been reported from various places of the district and Sullia taluk is  the worst affected. According to reports at least three Dengue deaths have been reported from here.

malaria 1Meanwhile, a huge awareness campaign on Dengue and Malaria is also being organised to sensitize the society  on the preventive measures to be taken against the diseases and also to enlighten the people on the symptoms of Dengue and Malaria.

If a total of 2,125 malaria cases were detected in the city from January to May last year,  the number of cases reported during the corresponding period in 2013 is 1,560 a decrease of 565 cases. While 550 cases of malaria were detected in May 2012, the number has come down to 294 in May 2013 While there were 42 cases of dengue in the city in 2012, the number of cases reported from January to May, this year is 18.

Maintaining cleanliness and  preve-nting water stagnation go a long way in preventing the spread of the disease. Construction sites where there is water stagnation, provide a fertile breeding ground for mosquitoes in most cases.

The Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district has already warned of stern action against builders failing to maintain cleanliness in construction sites and also against those who do not  ensure basic facilities to the construction workers. He has also warned of spot visits and even punishment like cancellation of licences of erring builders.
