New Delhi, Feb 13, 2026: Member of Parliament Brijesh Chowta has called for the establishment of a Marine Finfish Hatchery in Dakshina Kannada district to address the shortage of quality marine fish seed and boost fisheries-related livelihoods.

Raising the issue in the Lok Sabha under Rule 377, Mr. Chowta said Dakshina Kannada is a major fisheries hub in Karnataka, with thousands of people dependent on the sector. He stressed that a dedicated hatchery is essential to promote cage culture in the district and along the west coast.

The MP pointed out that the lack of quality marine fish seed is hampering the growth of marine aquaculture in the region, forcing farmers to source seed from the east coast. This, he said, results in higher costs, transportation challenges, and biosecurity risks.

Citing a report by the ICAR–Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, Mr. Chowta said the proposed hatchery could produce 1 to 2 million fish seed annually of various species, including cobia, silver pompano, Indian pompano, and snapper. He added that the facility would promote marine cage farming, generate employment, create opportunities for local entrepreneurs, and reduce pressure on natural fish resources.

He urged the government to provide the necessary technical and financial support to implement the project and establish the Marine Finfish Hatchery in Mangaluru.
