Mangalore, June 3, 2012: The Mangalore Institute of Oncology (MIO), Pumpwell, organized an anti-tobacco campaign in Mangalore on June 3, Sunday.
D. V. Sadananda Gowda, the chief minister of Karnataka, flagged off the rally in the presence of Yogish Bhat, deputy speaker of the state legislative assembly, and MP Nalin Kumar Kateel on the premises of the hospital. The rally passed through Bendoorwell, Balmatta, and Jyothi Circle, before ending at Nehru Maidan.
Addressing the gathering, the chief minister said that organizing similar rallies throughout the country to create awareness about the adverse effects of tobacco consumption is the need of the hour. Since a number of people suffer from cancer caused by tobacco consumption, one can prevent cancer by organizing such rallies, he said.
Over 430,000 people all over the world die because of tobacco consumption, and the cause for half the cases of cancer among men in India is tobacco consumption. The rally is being held to enhance public awareness on the effects of tobacco consumption and prevent tobacco-related deaths.
