Mangalore, June 3, 2012: A Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) team cracked down on an illegal abattoir in Kudroli at 5:30 a.m. on June 3, Sunday.
The team comprised 12 MCC officers, including health inspectors, under the leadership of Shrikanth Rao, MCC joint commissioner. The team seized 26 sheep and sent them to the MCC slaughter house.
The owner of the abattoir resisted and tried to prevent the MCC officers from inspecting the abattoir. The team, however, sealed the abattoir because the owner was running it without a permit.
The team then visited Central Market to inspect the meat stalls. Since meat supplied from MCC abattoirs carry a seal, officials checked various stalls to find out where they got the meat from. Although the MCC officers found nothing wrong, they instructed meat stall owners to maintain cleanliness.
Bharath Kumar, MCC health inspector, said that the team plans to raid and seal four more illegal abattoirs in Kudroli.
