MCC cracks down on street vendors for using banned plastic

Mangalore, July 24, 2012 : The Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) cracked down on street vendors near Central Market and State Bank on July 24, Tuesday for using plastic carry bags less than 40 microns.

When asked about their source of plastic carry bags, they said that they purchase carry bags from a man who comes selling them on a bike. Some of them, however, said that they purchase carry bags at a wholesale shop near State Bank.

The MCC team also raided the wholesale shop and found several carry bags less than 40 microns. They sealed the shop.

An MCC officer said that, besides seizing plastic carry bags and sealing the wholesale shop, they also collected fines of Rs. 2,650 from the vendors.

The team comprised Madhu, the environment officer, and inspectors Santhosh, Sushanth, Basavaraj, and Yashwanth Bhat.
