MCC and STEM discuss Mangalore city development plan

Mangalore, Feb 4: The Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) and the Symbiosis  Technology, Environment, and Management (STEM) jointly organized a workshop on Mangalore City Development Plan at its conference hall on Feb 4, Friday. Mayor Rajani Dugganna inaugurated the workshop.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Providing valuable information about the blue print of the city development plan, MCC Commissioner Dr. K. N. Vijayaprakash said that the chief objective of the workshop is to discuss the vision and mission of Mangalore city. He also spoke of the need to address issues such as traffic congestion, noise and air pollution, water scarcity, poverty, slums, and others.

Explaining the blue print of the city development plan, Ms Veena of STEM said that the Mangalore is the largest city in coastal Karnataka and has a population of 4.16 lakh as per the 2001 census. The population of Mangalore accounts for 57 percent of the urban population of the district and 69 percent of the urban population of the taluk. Suggesting that the city should be provided with adequate infrastructure to meet the requirements of its people in the future, she said that a city development plan for Mangalore is envisaged to promote and guide future infrastructural development in the city in collaboration with other forms of development proposed for the city.

Speaking about the demographic characteristics of Mangalore, she said that the population of the city grew at an average annual rate of over 1.9 percent during the last 30 years as against the national average annual rate of 2.1 percent and the state average annual rate of 3.6 percent.

She also mentioned that the water requirements of industries and MSEZ are not being met and that there is no water quality monitoring system at the consumer end.

Dr. Aradhya, Dr. B. M. Hegde of STEM, and others also participated in the workshop.
