Mangaluru, Apr 19, 2026: Emphasising that a literary work must reflect the writer’s distinct style and perspective, noted critic and former Vice-Chancellor B. A. Viveka Rai said that such qualities are clearly evident in the writings of Shivaram Karanth.

He was speaking after releasing the Kannada translation of “Karanthara Suliyalli”, translated by senior journalist Vishweshwar Bhat, at a function held at Ravindra Kalabhavan of University College here on Saturday.

Karanthara Suliyalli

The book, originally written in English as “Growing Up Karanth,” has been authored by Karanth’s children — Ullas Karanth, Malavika Kapur and Kshama Rao — 25 years after his demise. Rai described it as a work built on the children’s memories of their parents.

He noted that while similar works exist, this volume stands out for bringing together diverse perspectives shaped by different temperaments and professions. He also lauded the translation for retaining the original tone and essence.

Rai observed that writing about individuals after their lifetime allows for greater honesty and critical reflection, adding that the book effectively captures multiple voices and presents a balanced portrayal. Despite being a translation, it reads seamlessly in Kannada, enriched with elements of elegance, humour, critique and personal insights, he said, adding that the authors have portrayed their father as a genius with extraordinary talent.

Presiding over the event, Mangalore University Vice-Chancellor P. L. Dharma said the book is highly engaging and reflects Karanth as a mirror of society. He appreciated the quality of translation and described the work as culturally rich and insightful.

He further suggested that the Karanth Study Chair at Mangalore University should go beyond commemorative activities and focus on meaningful research, urging Ullas Karanth to help strengthen it.

N. G. Mohan of the Mahatma Gandhi Peace Foundation was present. University College Principal Dr. Ganapathi Gowda welcomed the gathering. Ullas Karanth delivered the introductory remarks, while Prof. Nagappa Gowda, Director of the Dr. Shivaram Karanth Chair, proposed the vote of thanks. The programme was compered by Dr. Dinesh Nayak.
