Lavanya murder case: Accused Chetan remanded to judicial custody

Mangaluru, Aug 1, 2026: The Bantwal court has remanded Chetan, the accused in the murder of a young woman, Lavanya, at the BC Road KSRTC bus stand, to judicial custody after the completion of police investigation procedures.

Following the incident, Chetan had allegedly consumed a poisonous substance (rat poison) while on the run and was admitted to Wenlock Hospital in Mangaluru for treatment. After doctors declared him fit, Bantwal Town Police took him into custody and produced him before the court.


Lavanya murder case

As further investigation was required, the police had earlier obtained his custody from the court. During the custody period, the investigating officers took the accused to the crime scene, conducted a spot mahazar (scene inspection), and carried out other necessary investigative procedures. They also gathered evidence and recorded statements as part of the probe.

After the expiry of the police custody period, Chetan was produced before the Bantwal court once again. After examining the case records, the court ordered that the accused be remanded to judicial custody.

Bantwal Town Police are continuing the investigation, and further legal action will be taken based on the progress of the probe, police sources said.
