Mangaluru, Mar 15, 2026: After major cities such as Bengaluru and Chennai, the LPG shortage crisis has now affected Mangaluru, with several hotels, canteens and street food outlets reportedly shutting down operations.
The shortage is linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has disrupted supply chains. Due to the lack of commercial LPG cylinders, many food establishments in parts of the city have been forced to close temporarily.

In Dakshina Kannada district, several hotels, restaurants and street food stalls have remained closed for the past two to three days in some areas. On Saturday too, hotel owners in many parts of the district, including Mangaluru city, faced difficulties in procuring commercial LPG cylinders.
Some establishments that had stocked cylinders earlier managed to continue operations for a few days. However, owners said they may be forced to shut down if the shortage persists.
The impact has also been felt in the fisheries sector. Fishermen said there is strong international demand for fish varieties such as shrimp, anjal, manji and bondas, which are usually exported. However, restrictions on the movement of container ships have affected exports.
Leaders of hotel owners’ associations in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts have urged authorities to ensure equitable distribution of LPG cylinders to the hospitality sector. They warned that more hotels may shut down if supply is not restored.
At present, district administrations have prioritised LPG supply for essential sectors such as households, educational institutions, hospitals, hostels, dormitories and religious institutions. Meanwhile, a few hotels that still use firewood for cooking have continued operations.
