Udupi, Aug 13, 2012 : Kota Shrinivas Poojary, district-in-charge minister for Udupi, convened a meeting at the DC’s office on August 11, Saturday to discuss the effects of monsoons on the district.
He instructed government officials to be available to handle any emergency situation. He told them to keep their mobile phones switched on 24 hours per day and attend all the calls without fail.
The DC said that areas affected by heavy rains and sea erosion have been provided traditional boats. He said that people in the twin districts are happy about the rains, but simultaneously, the rains have caused a lot of damage in several areas.
He urged families affected by floods to leave their homes and use government facilities till it is safe to return.
Stating that the DC’s office hasn’t received reports of agricultural losses, he said that roads have been badly damaged in several places.
It was decided at the meeting to earmark Rs. 3 crore to Rs. 5 crore to repair and restore damaged public property and to provide alternative solutions in places where vehicles can no longer ply.
So far, the rains have claimed four lives in Hattiangady and two in Bailoor, he said, adding that Rs. 1.5 lakh has been given as compensation to the families of the deceased. The DC also urged the police, volunteers, and fire brigade to involve themselves fully in rescue operations. Receiving reports from the tahsildars of Karkala, Kundapur, and Udupi, the Zilla Panchayat, the Mescom, the PWD, and the CMC, he urged all these bodies to give maximum support to the people.
The MLAs have also requested the district-in-charge minister to request the state government to sanction funds. The minister replied that at least Rs. 10 crore is required to deal with the situation. He assured that the MLAs will meet the CM personally and discuss the issue with him.
