Kasargod: Son kills mother by setting her ablaze

Kasargod, June 26, 2025: In a shocking incident reported from Varkady, a man killed his mother by setting her ablaze after dousing her with kerosene. The incident took place on Thursday. The accused Melwyn Monteiro (26) has fled the scene of the crime in an autorickshaw after killing his mother Hilda Monteiro (59). A neighbour and relative Victor and his wife Lolita (30) have also suffered serious burn injuries.

The accused reportedly took his mother to the backyard of the house during the wee hours of Thursday and set her ablaze and then dumped the body amid bushes in a place nearly 100 meters away from the house. He then informed Lolita and Victor that his mother is missing. When they visited his house, he tried to set them ablaze too.

Police have gathered information that the accused had boarded an autorickshaw to Hosangady and then from there had travelled towards Mangaluru by bus. He was a labourer. The reason behind the extreme step is yet to be known.

The deceased woman has another son named Alwyn who had left for Kuwait just a month ago to join work.
