Kasargod, July 26, 2025: Residents of Kanhangad South breathed a sigh of relief after authorities safely transferred gas from an overturned tanker to other tankers following a major accident. Traffic on the national highway, which had been blocked since early morning, resumed once the high-risk operation was successfully completed.
A specialized team from Mangaluru managed to transfer the gas from the damaged tanker into three separate tankers, stabilizing the situation. The operation was completed by 11:30 p.m., and vehicular movement restarted around 2:00 a.m. Officials were lauded for handling the process without any mishaps.
The incident occurred Thursday night when a tanker traveling from Bengaluru to Coimbatore overturned after the driver lost control. Though there was no immediate gas leak, precautionary steps were taken — electricity was cut off, and residents were evacuated for safety.
On Friday morning, a gas leak was detected while attempting to lift the overturned tanker with a crane, causing panic in the area. Authorities quickly contacted HPCL officials in Mangaluru.
The coordinated efforts of the District Disaster Management Authority, police, and fire services ensured the safe transfer of gas, bringing the situation under control by late Friday night.
