Kasargod, Feb 3, 2026: In a harrowing incident that has shaken the local community, an 18-year-old student was allegedly murdered by her father at Kunjathur Hill Top near Manjeshwar on Monday evening.
The victim, identified as Mariyam Jumaila, a Plus Two student, succumbed to her injuries after attempting to mediate a violent family dispute. Her father, Ummar Farooq, is currently in police custody.
The Fatal Altercation
The tragedy unfolded around 6:00 PM at the residence of Farooq’s sister-in-law, where the family had been staying. According to police reports, a long-standing property dispute between Farooq and his brother-in-law, Sheikh Kunhi, reached a breaking point on Monday.
During a heated confrontation, Farooq reportedly brandished a sharp weapon and attempted to attack Kunhi. In a desperate bid to protect her uncle and de-escalate the violence, Jumaila intervened. She was struck during the melee, sustaining critical stab wounds to her neck and leg.
Emergency Response and Investigation
Local residents, alerted by the screams coming from the house, discovered the teenager in a pool of blood. She was rushed to a hospital in Mangaluru for emergency treatment but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Sheikh Kunhi also sustained injuries during the attack and is receiving medical attention.
Key investigation details include:
* Arrest: Manjeshwar police apprehended Ummar Farooq shortly after the incident.
* Weapon Seized: The knife used in the crime has been recovered by investigators.
Suspected Motive: While the property dispute was the immediate trigger, police sources indicate the accused is a known drug addict, which may have contributed to the volatility of the situation.
The body has been moved to the taluk hospital for a postmortem examination following the completion of the mahazar (on-site evidence collection). A formal case has been registered, and a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the killing is ongoing.
