Kasaragod: Woman dies by suicide after alleged mental harassment over gold theft

Kasaragod, Feb 23, 2026: A 24-year-old woman who was reportedly distressed after being accused of gold theft died by suicide at Nelthadka near Adoor. Her family has alleged that she took the extreme step due to mental harassment by neighbours and the police.

The deceased has been identified as Jaseela (24) of Nelthadka.

According to reports, Jaseela consumed poison on Sunday (Feb. 15). She had been undergoing treatment at a hospital in Kasaragod but succumbed on Saturday. Family members claim that she was subjected to continuous mental harassment by neighbours and the police after being accused of stealing gold ornaments, which drove her to suicide. It is also alleged that she recorded a video proclaiming her innocence before consuming poison.

A youth living near her husband’s house and his family had reportedly accused Jaseela of theft. The complaint states that she was taken to the police station and mentally harassed under the pretext of interrogation. Her family further alleged that defamatory content about her was circulated on social media, which caused her severe emotional distress. Jaseela was a mother of two children.

Although the police had conducted an inquiry into the theft allegation, no evidence or clues were found against her, and she was released. However, the distressed woman later ended her life.

A case of unnatural death has been registered at the Adoor police station.
