Karnataka govt grants permission to start English medium in 4,134 schools

Bengaluru, July 4, 2025: The state government has granted permission to start English medium in 4,134 schools from the current academic year.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had made this announcement in the budget.

Accordingly, in an order, the Department of School Education and Literacy said that the government has approved the commencement of English medium sections in these schools, considering the increase in the demand for English medium.

The department has also given permission to start new bilingual sections in government high schools in Thirthahalli, Bilalukoppa, Hosur-Guddakeri and Heddur of Shivamogga district, the hometown of School Education and Literacy Minister Madhu Bangarappa.

In 2019-20, the government started bilingual education in 1,000 government schools across the state and increased it to 2,000 schools in 2024-25. Of the 4,134 schools, Bengaluru North and South house 1,103 schools and 2,897 government schools in the remaining 33 educational districts. The department has instructed the officials to start the English medium classes utilising the locally available resources.
