Karkala: Heavy rain, strong winds cause widespread damage to crops, houses

Udupi, May 12, 2026: Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds over the past two days has caused widespread damage in several parts of Karkala taluk, severely affecting horticulture crops and houses. Reports received so far indicate losses exceeding Rs 5 lakh in more than 10 cases related to horticulture damage alone.

Bola village in Karkala taluk was the worst affected by the storm and rain. The plantation belonging to Jayaram Salian suffered extensive damage, with losses estimated at over Rs 1 lakh.

The plantations of Ronald and Roshan Tellis in Bola village were also badly hit, with several trees, plants and vines uprooted and destroyed. Their losses are estimated at more than Rs 50,000 each.

Similarly, Somnath, Krishna Shetty, Ratna Moolya and George Alphonse of Bola village are estimated to have suffered losses of around Rs 40,000 each. Narayana Moolya, Gutthu Santosh and Narayana Shetty of Mudradi village are estimated to have incurred losses of about Rs 20,000 each.

Lightning strikes damage houses

Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning on Friday and Saturday damaged two houses in Kalya and Kukkundoor villages. The houses belonging to Chandrashekar Acharya of Kalya and Dinesh of Kukkundoor were struck by lightning, resulting in major damage.

Apart from this, reports suggest that more than 20 houses in Nandalike, Mundkur, Bola, Kukkundoor and Belman areas of Karkala taluk suffered partial damage due to strong winds and rain. Bola village alone witnessed extensive destruction.

Houses belonging to Shambhavi Shetty, Geetha Shetty, Gutthu Santosh Shetty, Ratna Moolya, Sanjeeva Shetty, Sundari Shetty, Sunitha Shetty, Prema S. Shetty, Yogendra Poojary, Pushpa Poojary, Narayana Poojary, Sunanda Poojary, Ananda Salian, Mohan Poojary and Narayana Moolya were among those damaged. The total loss to houses is estimated to exceed Rs 2 lakh.

However, despite the damage caused by pre-monsoon showers, the district has not received the expected amount of rainfall. As of Sunday morning, Udupi district recorded an average rainfall of 2.4 mm during the previous 24 hours. Karkala received 8.4 mm rainfall, followed by Kapu with 2.9 mm, Brahmavar with 1.7 mm and Udupi with 1.2 mm.
