
Kapu, Jan 31, 2026: Thieves reportedly broke into the house of Congress leader Kapu Diwakar Shetty, located near Kothalakatte in Uliyargoli village, on the night of January 29 and made away with gold ornaments and other valuables worth several lakhs of rupees.
Diwakar Shetty and his family had travelled to Mumbai to attend a family function. After midnight, the burglars allegedly broke open the main door and ransacked the house. They reportedly turned the CCTV cameras away from the house and took the DVR with them.
According to the complaint, the thieves stole around 30 grams of gold ornaments, about ₹9 lakh in cash, silver tumblers, three wristwatches worth approximately ₹3 lakh, and silver vessels weighing about 300 grams. The total value of the stolen property is estimated at ₹19.05 lakh.
A close associate of Diwakar Shetty was asleep on the upper floor of the house at the time of the incident and was unaware of the burglary. It is alleged that the thieves even entered and searched the room where he was sleeping. The burglars also reportedly took his mobile phone and later threw it on the national highway.
A dog squad and fingerprint experts visited the spot for inspection. Udupi DySP D.T. Prabhu, Circle Inspector Ajjath Ali, ASI Tejasvi, fingerprint division inspector Mohini, along with Kapu police personnel, conducted the investigation. A case has been registered at the Kapu police station.
Temple Donation Box Theft
In a separate incident, thieves allegedly broke into the Padebettu Sri Subrahmanya Temple in Padubidri late at night and stole ₹1,500 in cash.
According to the complaint, the thieves brought two donation boxes, a pedestal lamp and iron rods outside the temple, used the lamp and rods to break open the boxes, and fled with the cash.
