KPRS demands land and houses for the poor

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Nov 5, 2012: The Karnataka Prantha Raitha Sangha (KPRS) organized a protest in front of the Taluk Panchayath office on Nov 5, demanding land and homes for the poor and homeless.

In his protest address, KPRS President K. R. Shriyan said that rise in prices of basic commodities is making it very difficult for common people to survive. Since the rate of land has also gone up, ordinary people can now only dream of owning land. Besides, the government is giving away land to private companies and businessmen in spite of the fact that poor families have been living in huts for the past 15 years.

Stating that the government owns a lot of land in the country, he said that the government can distribute land among the landless and the homeless so that they can live decently, but the government is giving away land only to the rich people. Although some families have constructed houses on government land, the government has not yet given electricity connection, door number, and ration cards to these people. He demanded land rights and other necessary documents for these people.

Further, he said that all the families who had applied for land rights and had their applications rejected should get their rights immediately. He said that the KPRS had protested in Bangalore in front of the DC’s office on May 21 and the ministers had promised to identify 452 acres of land in Mangalore. He also complained that the BJP government, which had promised to work for the welfare of the poor, has done nothing. He demanded to know details of the land identified.

The protestors were arrested and taken to the Pandeshwar Police Station.

K. Krishnappa Salian, president of Niveshana Rahita Horata Samithi, Secretary Ashok Shetty, KPRS General Secretary Yadav Shetty, and many others took part in the protest.
