Mangaluru, May 29, 2026: Justice K S Hegde Charitable Hospital, Deralakatte, will celebrate World Paediatric Surgery Week from June 4 to 10, 2026, with a series of awareness and outreach programmes aimed at highlighting the importance of timely surgical care for children.

World Paediatric Surgery Week is observed globally to create awareness about surgical conditions affecting children and the need for accessible and quality paediatric surgical care. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Safe Surgery for Every Child”.

As part of the observance, the Department of Paediatric Surgery at the hospital will conduct various events and awareness activities throughout the week. The department comprises three super specialists — Dr Sandeep B Rai, Professor and Dean of KSHEMA, Dr Aureen D’Cunha, Associate Professor and In-charge Head of the Department, and Dr Keshava Pavan, Assistant Professor.

The department highlighted that Paediatric Surgery is a specialised branch dealing with the diagnosis, surgical treatment and post-operative care of children from newborns to adolescents. Doctors noted that children require specialised surgical care as their physiological and surgical needs differ significantly from adults.

To mark the occasion, the hospital will organise a quiz competition for undergraduate and postgraduate students, along with a poster competition open to students and staff of Nitte University. On the concluding day, an entertainment and cultural programme will be held for current and former patients and their families, followed by a formal function.

In a major initiative during the week-long programme, the hospital management has announced a 50 per cent concession on surgeries performed by the Department of Paediatric Surgery for children attending the Outpatient Department during the celebration period. The initiative is expected to benefit financially disadvantaged patients requiring surgical treatment.

Hospital authorities said the observance also aims to encourage collaboration among healthcare institutions, government bodies and non-government organisations to improve paediatric surgical facilities, particularly in rural and underserved regions.
