Journalists’ Assn., political parties protest against Soorinje’s arrest

Mangalore, Nov 8, 2012: The Dakshina Kannada District Working Journalists’ Association (DKDWJA) protested in front the Mangalore Police Commissionerate condemning the arrest of Sharan, a TV channel cameraman, and Naveen. Speaking on the occasion, P. B. Harish Rai, president of DKDWJA, said that the police department failed to take journalists into confidence with regard to the home stay attack.

 

Harish Rai said that Seemanth Kumar Singh, the then Mangalore police commissioner, had assured that a joint committee would be formed comprising journalists and police officers to investigate the home stay attack. However, the police have registered a case against Naveen Soorinje without even forming a joint committee. He demanded that the charges against Sharan and Naveen must be re-investigated.

The Visual Media Journalists’ Association also protested in front of the police commissionerate. Tharantha Kapikad, president of this association, demanded special police protection for Naveen, who is now in Mangalore Jail. He said that the Mangalore Jail, which is now notorious for its group fights, is not safe for Naveen Soorinje, adding that the police should arrange special security for him

Several organizations and political parties protested against the arrest of Kasturi TV channel reporter Naveen Soorinje in connection with the home stay attack of July 28, in front of the DC’s office today.

Muneer Katipalla, president of the DK unit of the DYFI, said that certain influential parties are taking revenge on Naveen because he has exposed their wrongdoings. He urged the government to file a special petition in the court and drop all charges against Naveen.
