Mangalore, Jan 11: Jarkhand (Rajyasabha) MP, Mabel Rebello, who was here to receive the Rachana Outstanding Woman of the Year Award, interacted with the postgraduate students of Fr. Muller Medical College, Mangalore.

Fr. Stany, Dr. Sanjeev Rai, Fr. Dennis D’Sa, and various members of the faculty were present during the interaction, which was held in the Conference Hall of Fr. Muller Charitable Hospital.

Speaking about the Naxal groups and the various causes of their origin, she said that a number of young people from the Catholic community are now turning Naxals with the intention of fighting for the rights of the poor. However, once they join Naxal groups, they become financially rich and forget the core principles for which they once turned Naxals. They then become the guardians of the rich and powerful members of society, amass wealth themselves, and send their children abroad for studies. They completely forget the poor and their rights.

She said that poverty and corruption are rampant in India. In the past, entrepreneurs and ministers fought for the establishment of capitalism and they were successful. Capitalism has led to a lot of financial progress within the country. However, only 30 percent people are enjoying this wealth and prosperity. The rest of the people are dying of starvation.

Corruption is wrecking our country, said Mabel Rebello. The officials function only when they are bribed. The only way to combat corruption is to raise one’s voice against it. Young people have a great role to play in controling corruption.

Mabel Rebello also said that only a few states enjoy good infrastructure and facilities. Other states are still backward. Many children in our country are denied of quality education.

Mabel Rebello encouraged the students to build a country in which there is no corruption and to make all facilities available to everybody. She also requested students to stay away from anti-social elements who attempt to spoil the peace of the country and hinder the progress.
