Mangalore, March 8: The DK Zilla Panchayath Women and Child Welfare Department of Mangalore, the District Legal Service Authority of Mangalore, the District Women’s Federation Union, and the Karnataka State Women’s Commission of Bangalore jointly observed International Women’s Day at Town Hall on March 8, Tuesday.

MP Nalin Kumar Kateel inaugurated the event and said in his inaugural address that women are not only given importance, but also respected and worshipped in India. Stating that modern women stand equal to men, he said that the CM B. S. Yeddyurappa’s Bhagyalakshmi scheme has greatly encouraged women. He urged women not to limit themselves to fighting for their rights and freedom, but also work to preserve the tradition and culture of the country and pass it on to the next generation.


The Best Mandala Award was conferred on the Puttur-based Navyashree Mahila Mandala and its president Premalatha Rao was felicitated.


Dr. Rathi Devi, the professor of KMC, said in his address that a woman always gives first priority to her family and then thinks of herself. She urged women to take care of their health while they balance with household chores, career, and kids.


ZP President K. T. Shailaja Bhat released “Nisargadatta Ahara,” a book by Vidya Nayak. She also inaugurated a display of hand-made items such as eatables, bags, pickles, and others by women’s self-help groups.


The book “Vaidyakiya Garbha Paathadha Nuthana Guligegala Sadhaka Badhakagulu,” by Dr. Rathi Devi was released by Shakunthala A., the deputy director of Women and Child Welfare Development Department.


Dhanalakshmi Janardhana D., the vice president of DK Zilla Panchayath, was also present on the occasion.

Rohini Katoch urges women to join civil service department

Mangalore, March 8: In her inaugural address, delivered after inaugurating a one-day workshop titled “Celebrating the Past, Planning the Future” organized by St. Agnes College on Tuesday on the occasion of International Women’s Day, Rohini Katoch, the assistant superintendent of police of Puttur division, urged all women to join the civil service in large numbers.

Speaking about the large number of opportunities present in the civil services department, she said that women should give up the idea that they are fit only for a particular kind of job and should grab these opportunities. Encouraging girl students to be bold and confident, Katoch said that they should learn to take their own decisions in life. She advised girl students to empower themselves with knowledge.

Principal Dr. C. Prem M. D’Souza presided. The students also staged a Hindi play titled “Yahan Rona Mana Hai” based on women’s issues.

Dr. Poornima J., the senior specialist in gynecology at Lady Goschen Hospital and Sr. Maria Kripa were also present. Shammy Shiri, the assistant professor of Welcome Graduate School of Hotel Management in Manipal, and Dr. Prema D’Cunhan, a gynecologist at Fr. Muller Medical College Hospital, spoke on the topics “Problems Faced by Adolescents” and “Women and Problems of Cancer,” respectively.


Women’s Day celebration at St. Ans College

St. Ann’s College of Education organized “Stree Utsav,” on the occasion of which a CD introducing 30 famous women, prepared by the students, was released. The chief guests were Vaidehi, the Kannada writer, and Anitha Arekal, the IFS officer.

School of Roshni Nilaya Mangalore organized special programmes on the occasion of International Women’s Day on March 8, 2011.

School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, organized an exhibition based on problems of adolescent girls in a bid to enhance awareness, spread knowledge, and make girls feel proud of their womanhood.

School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, organized an exhibition based on problems of adolescent girls in a bid to enhance awareness, spread knowledge, and make girls feel proud of their womanhood.

Dr. Shrirangappa, the district health officer, inaugurated a special programme titled “Kanya Hrudaya.” In his address, he said that girls face a number of challenges while moving from childhood to adulthood and stressed the need to give them right knowledge and plenty of emotional and social support. Informing his listeners that the ratio of women to men is 973 to 1000, he said that there should be equal number of men and women to create balance in the social system.

Principal Jacintha D’Souza was also present.
