Mangaluru, Aug 28, 2020: Y Gangi Reddy, serving as Police Inspector in Karnataka Coastal Security Police station, was found guilty of owning assets disproportionate to his known source of income and was sentenced to four years of imprisonment by Lokayukta special court and Third Additional District and Sessions Judge B B Jakati on Thursday.
The Judge also ordered Gangi Reddy to pay a fine amount of Rs 5 lakh. In 2009, district Lokayukta registered a complaint against Gangi Reddy, who was then serving as Inspector of Beltangady police station, based on the complaint lodged by one Srinivas Prasad.
The then Lokayukta DySP Sadananda Varnekar had conducted raids on the houses of Reddy and his brother in Bengaluru. The team had seized documents revealing that Gangi Reddy had amassed wealth disproportionate to his known source of income. Property worth more than Rs 19 lakh was unearthed.
Lokayukta DySP M Vittal Das Pai completed the investigation and submitted chargesheet against Reddy. As many as 22 witnesses were examined on behalf of the prosecution. Special Lokayukta court upheld the arguments of Special Ppublic Prosecutor K S N Rajesh.
The Judge B B Jakati in a 111-page judgement declared that Reddy was found guilty under the section 13(1)E of Prevention of Corruption Act 1988. The Judge also declared that Gangi Reddy will have to undergo an additional imprisonment of one year if he failed to pay the fine amount. Gangi Reddy is presently in judicial custody.
