Mangaluru, June 28, 2026: The walls of Mangaluru Central Prison have been transformed into a vibrant art gallery with murals depicting freedom fighters, Tulunadu’s cultural heritage and national icons, thanks to the artistic talent of an inmate.
Surendran, a native of Kasaragod who has been lodged in the prison for the past three months in connection with a settlement-related case, has used his professional training in painting and fine arts to beautify the prison premises. Encouraged by Prison Superintendent Sharanabasappa, he began painting the walls after his artistic skills came to light.

The murals include portraits of Mahatma Gandhi, Subhas Chandra Bose and Bhagat Singh, while paintings of Yakshagana, Kambala, tiger dance and former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam are also planned. Surendran, who is proficient in monochrome and Warli art, is assisted by two fellow inmates trained as art directors.
Superintendent Sharanabasappa said the prison has provided the required materials and the inmates have been working on the project over the past 10 days during designated hours. He added that the initiative has not only enhanced the prison’s appearance but also created a positive environment for inmates and staff.
The prison is also planning to introduce skill development programmes in collaboration with the State Skills Development Board and RUDSET Institute, Dharmasthala. Proposed courses include CCTV repair and fast-food preparation through NGO support.
Inmates said engaging in creative activities has helped reduce stress, keep negative thoughts at bay and provide mental relief.
