Mangaluru, Jan 11, 2026: India should not remain a silent spectator to the killing of Hindus in Bangladesh and must take immediate action, said Dr. Swasti Rao, Advisory Editor of The Print and Associate Professor at OP Jindal Global University.
Speaking at a session titled “Challenges of Neighbouring Countries” on the second day of the 8th Mangaluru Lit Fest, Dr. Rao described the developments in Bangladesh as deeply concerning. Recalling India’s intervention during the 1971 crisis to protect the people of Bangladesh, she said that reports of renewed violence against Hindus demanded a firm response from the Indian government.

Dr. Rao said India enjoys strong diplomatic relations with major global powers, including the United States, Russia, the European Union and the African Union. She added that India has consistently extended support to its neighbouring countries and expressed confidence that these nations would stand by India in the future.
On China’s growing influence in the region, Dr. Rao said India was facing multiple challenges within the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). She noted that India had boycotted a SAARC summit in the past due to Pakistan’s support for terrorism, but cautioned against completely abandoning the forum. Instead, she called for alternative strategies to prevent China from expanding its influence in the region.
Former Indian Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ruchira Kamboj, who also took part in the discussion, highlighted India’s diplomatic outreach to neighbouring countries. She said India has played a major role in providing assistance during crises and natural disasters and has consistently responded during emergencies. Emphasising the importance of trust and credibility in diplomacy, she said India has always honoured the confidence placed in it by other nations.
The session was moderated by Dr. Biddanda Chengappa.
