IMD issues yellow alert for coastal Karnataka on Friday

Mangaluru, May 23, 2025: India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday issued yellow alert (heavy rainfall ranging from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm) to Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts on May 23, Friday.

The yellow alert is valid till 8.30 a.m. on May 24, Saturday.

It said squally weather with wind speed 40 km/ph to 50 km/ph gusting to 60 kmph is likely to prevail in Karnataka cost on Friday and Saturday, it said.

The IMD bulletin said: “Under the influence of yesterday’s upper air cyclonic circulation over Eastcentral Arabian Sea off North Karnataka-Goa coasts, a low pressure area has formed over Eastcentral Arabian Sea off south Konkan Goa coasts at 5.30 a.m. on May 22 and persist at 8.30 a.m. over the same region. It is likely to move nearly northwards and concentrate into a depression during next 36 hours. There is also possibility of its further intensification thereafter,” the bulletin issued at 12.30 p.m. said.  

It asked fishermen not to sail out for fishing in the sea till May 26.
