Bengaluru, Apr 3, 2026: Coastal Karnataka is likely to witness heightened rainfall activity over the next 24 hours, with thundershowers and lightning expected, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for several parts of the state.

According to the IMD, coastal and Malnad districts are set to receive moderate to heavy showers, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours.

Yellow alert

The change in weather is attributed to a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, which is influencing rainfall across south interior Karnataka, coastal regions, and the Western Ghats.

The early April showers have provided relief from the recent spell of intense summer heat. As a precaution, more than 14 districts have been placed under a yellow alert, with warnings of gusty winds, lightning, and intermittent rain.

Cloudy skies, light rain likely in Bengaluru

In Bengaluru, weather conditions are expected to remain partly sunny during the day, with cloudy skies and chances of light showers in the evening.

The maximum temperature is likely to range between 32°C and 34°C, while the minimum temperature may hover between 21°C and 23°C. Rainfall in the city is expected to be scattered, with alternating sunshine and cloud cover continuing over the next few days.

Yellow alert in multiple regions

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for April 4 across coastal Karnataka, Malnad, and parts of south interior districts, forecasting moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning. However, some areas in south interior Karnataka may receive comparatively lesser rainfall, with dry conditions persisting in pockets.

Rain likely to intensify after April 10

The weather department has indicated that rainfall activity is expected to intensify across the state after April 10. Districts including Bidar, Kalaburagi, Vijayapura, Hassan, Mysuru, Mandya, and Kodagu, along with Bengaluru Urban and Rural districts, are likely to receive more widespread rainfall during this period.

Meanwhile, the IMD has cautioned that the possible development of El Niño conditions from June could influence the southwest monsoon this year.

Overall, heavier rainfall is expected in coastal and Malnad districts such as Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Kodagu, Shivamogga, and Chikkamagaluru, while Bengaluru and nearby regions are likely to remain under cloudy skies with intermittent showers.
