IMD issues red alert for coastal Karnataka; Heavy rainfall disrupts normal life

Mangaluru/Udupi, July 20, 2025: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the coastal belt of Karnataka, warning of gusty winds and intense rainfall during the 24-hour period starting 8:30 a.m. on Sunday. An orange alert has also been issued for the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada for the period from July 21 to 26.


Red Alert for Coastal Karnataka


In Dakshina Kannada, schools and Pre-University colleges remained shut on Saturday in the taluks of Mangaluru, Bantwal, and Ullal due to the inclement weather. The district recorded 28 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday. The cumulative rainfall since January 1 has touched 2,911 mm, significantly surpassing the average of 1,930 mm for the same period.

According to the District Disaster Management Authority, 22 electricity poles and 1.1 km of power lines were damaged across the district within 24 hours.

Mangaluru taluk received the highest rainfall at 55.4 mm, followed by Ullal (48.1 mm), Bantwal (43.1 mm), Puttur (32.6 mm), Sullia (31 mm), Mulki (28.5 mm), Kadaba (26.6 mm), Moodbidri (21.9 mm), and Belthangady (8.5 mm).

In Udupi district, 28.4 mm of rainfall was recorded during the same 24-hour period. Kaup taluk reported the highest at 50.5 mm, followed by Udupi (37.3 mm), Hebri (32.7 mm), Karkala (30.6 mm), Byndoor (29.1 mm), Brahmavar (26.4 mm), and Kundapura (16.8 mm). The district administration reported minor damage to three houses in Kapu taluk and one house in Kundapura.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation, and residents in low-lying and vulnerable areas have been advised to remain cautious.
