
Udupi, Nov 23, 2012: R. Ashok, deputy chief minister and minister for home and transport, inaugurated the new KSRTC bus depot (Udupi unit) under the Mangalore division on Nov 23, Friday. He also inaugurated 4 new KSRTC buses to Mysore and the new regional transport office (RTO) in Rajathadri.
Addressing reporters, Mr. Ashok said that KSRTC bus depots should be built in all districts as a majority of KSRTC buses provide as much as 78% concession to students. In case of any unfortunate incident, they will get compensation of as much as Rs. 2 lakhs. These are facilities that are not available in private bus services.

Speaking about improving coastal security, he said that the state government is aware of coastal problems, adding that the government is working on implementing a better security system for the coastal belt. Recalling the Mumbai terror attacks, he said that Indians can never forget lessons once learnt. Breach of security can never be allowed as it is a question of not only district security, but security of the entire country.
Voicing his opinions about the Sowjanya rape and murder case, the minister said that the government has referred the case to the COD, which is expected to submit its investigative report in a couple of months.
While refusing to make any comments on former CM Yeddyurappa’s new party, he said that the KJP will hold a committee meeting in Haveri on December 9.
Taking part in the stage program organized at the RTO office, Mr. Ashok said that the old RTO building rented for Rs. 30,000 and the new RTO building, which is located on a 1.41 acre plot, cost Rs. 6.42 crore. Speaking about the new structure, he said that it is a state-of-the-art building featuring a smart card system and advanced technology.
Stating that the district already has 2,32,000 registered vehicles, he said that too many vehicles are not good for the society and the environment. He urged the public to use public transportation systems as much as possible.
